The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

Hi everyone! About 2 years ago I read The Rose Code by Kate Quinn which, since then, has been my favorite book.

The Rose Code follows 3 girls, Mab, Beth, and Osla. All three of them are quite different from each other. Osla is very elegant and is in the upper class. Meanwhile, Mab is much more poor and is struggling to support both her mother and younger sister, Lucy. Beth is more quiet and introverted and when Mab and Osla found her living with her crazy mom, they helped her get out of that house and they all began to live together. Each of these girls work in a coding school to help decode letters that have been intercepted from the Nazi. Over time, the three girls get comfortable with their job until they discover a threat to attack Coventry.

Now, before I continue, I would just like to say that the following information is a SPOILER: Beth decoded the threat and did not tell her two friends. They end up going to Coventry and Mab loses her younger sister and husband. Osla was the one watching Lucy, so her death split up Mab and Osla. END OF SPOILER.

Beth decodes a very important message but before she can do anything, a traitor in the building gets her sent to a mental asylum. Osla and Mab, enraged at Beth for not telling them about the threat, do not help her. A couple years later, Osla and Mab finally help Beth and help decode the message to uncover the traitor.

They end up getting the traitor and they all finally can live their lives.

This book is a great book if you are into historical fiction, coding, mysteries, books that involve traitors, and female leads.

I love this book for multiple reasons but one of them has to be how captivating each scene of the story is. During this book there are multiple plot twists and newly revealed information that surprises you each time. Just when you think the story is about to end, a new problem arises  changing the whole course of the story to the point you can’t know where each of the characters are going to end up. It is about 656 pages but each time I picked up the book I was excited to continue the story.

I hope you consider reading this book!

  1. Wow, this sounds like such an interesting book! I really enjoy reading books that are so good you can't put them down and this seems like that type of book. The relationships between the female leads sounds really in engrossing and intricate. I am curious about how the dynamic between them is after all the events you mentioned in your post (The decoded threat, the death, and the mental asylum.) I think books exploring female characters and their almost sisterly relationships are so fascinating because they are never black and white. Thanks for the recommendation!
