The Eye of Minds

(Contains Spoilers)
I recently finished reading the Maze Runner series by James Dashner. Since I really enjoyed the series, I decided to check what other books Dasher wrote, and settled on a series named The Mortile Doctrine, with the first book being The Eye of Minds.

The book takes place in the future, with the main concept being a hyper-realistic multiplayer video game, called the VirtualNetwork (VirtNet), which all people can play. The book starts with Michael, the protagonist, in the VirtNet, with the task of saving a girl from jumping of a bridge. While talking to her he finds out about Kaine, a cyber-terrorist, who trapped her and many others in the VirtNet. In the end he tries saving her but ends up falling after her, to his death. In the VirtNet, when you die you get "lifted" or returned to the real world, which is what happened to Michael.

In the next few chapters many things are explained. The real life is called "The Wake" and the VirtNet is called "The Sleep". Michael has two friends, Bryson and Sarah, whom he only knows through the sleep. In the VirtNet you can "hack" by closing your eyes and concentrating on the code to manipulate it. There is also the VNS (Virtual Network Security) which is the police of the sleep. In the wake Michael lives with a nanny, Helga. His parents are often away on business trips. Michael often meets up with his friends in the sleep to do various activities. The VirtNet is just like the real world, but it's not the real world, and you can hack to get what you want. The better you are at hacking, the more possibilities you have.

One day Michael was walking to school, in the real world, when he noticed a car was following him. He tried running away but it caught up and a man came out and "kidnapped" him. Turns out they worked with the VNS. Michael was driven to a mysterious building, where he had a talk with a woman. She tasked Michael and his friends to look for Kaine, to stop him, and to report to the VNS about him. She also said that the VNS could watch him and his friends while he was in the sleep.

This was the actual start of the book. For the rest of the book Michael, Bryson, and Sarah are looking for Keine through various games. They are close to death various times, and have to use their coding skills to get out of deadly situations. I haven't finished the book yet, but from my knowledge on how books work, either they will find him, or be sent onto another trail which they will follow in the next book.

Comparing the Eye of Minds and the Maze Runner they are quite similar. Both have groups of kids fighting for a goal, constantly having to avoid unexpected obstacles. Both have suspense, excitement, and adventure. I highly recommend reading the Eye of Minds to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi novels. The book does contain some violent scenes, but perfectly fine for any Freshman.
