The Most Lyrically Entertaining Book I've Ever Read
Hello Everyone!
Several weeks ago, I finished reading On the Come Up by Angie Thomas (for the second time, her books are very good.) So, I decided to share how it was with everyone!
When reading the books’ summary on the back, I knew I’d be interested. First off, the way Angie Thomas uses her other book, The Hate U Give in this book is astonishing. The main character in the book is Brianna. Brianna is a black, 16-year old girl who lives in Garden Heights. In this book, she lives on the east side of The Garden. Brianna wants to be a rapper. The first scene of the book begins when she’s in her classroom. She is anxiously waiting to see if she’s been accepted into a rap battle. After her first battle, she ends up making her first song and this is how the drama begins. In her song, she references different things that happen in her life because she lives in an area where most people live paycheck to paycheck which causes most people to do things they shouldn’t do. In this book, they refer to this place as, “The Hood.”
That was just the backstory for the record. The paragraph above has nothing to do with my liking for the book. It’s for a completely different reason.
Throughout this book, Brianna randomly freestyles in her head. When I first read this, I smiled. It was very interesting to read a book that had someone do the exact same thing as me (albeit I do know I do it aloud sometimes.) Additionally, she also owns a snack business. In fact, she made a rap about her snack business. Speaking of her raps, there are multiple throughout the book, each better than the last. This is why I like this book. It tells a realistic story that highlights black heritage while also being entertaining,
Now for the bad parts about this book…
Well, here’s the thing:
There’s nothing really bad. Honestly, I feel that this book is more enjoyable than The Hate U Give. While the message of this book is debatably not as important. It is simply funny, and it still sends a good message.
In conclusion, On the Come Up is a wonderful book that you should definitely read. I’d give it a 10/10 on a rating scale. This book is excellent for people who want to have a little laugh while they read and learn a little about black history. Additionally, the freestyles in this book are very fun to read and repeat aloud with a beat. Reading Angie Thomas’ other books in this series isn't required to enjoy this book.
I hope you enjoy my review! Until next time…
Peace!
Marshall
Great review!! This book sounds super interesting. I like that you mentioned how this book is able to educate readers on culture and history while still being entertaining. I read and really enjoyed The Hate You Give in 7th grade so based on your review it sounds like I would like On The Come Up as well. I will definitely add it to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of music and lyricism so I've got to check this book out if it includes several different rap songs throughout. I also love learning about different heritages and the backstory of the main character Brianna sounds really interesting too! Great job
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big rap fan but I can appreciate the attention to detail in the music genre's lyrics, something missing from most other genres today. Incorporating the atmosphere or rap into the structure of a novel sounds enriching and interesting. Great post!
