Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

 Hi everyone!

I finished Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, the last book in the trilogy (if you don’t count the prequel A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and I have to admit it was underwhelming compared to the previous books.

There isn’t much I can say about the plot without spoiling the ending but basically this book goes over the rebellion and the war in which the Rebels (the Districts) and the Capitol are fighting against each other. In this book, there are many betrayals, plot twists, unexpected deaths and suspenseful moments. Although it was extremely boring and repetitive at times, there were also times where I was in shock and did not see it coming.

The book was very complex. There were a lot of parts to it and small pieces of information that you have to remember for it to make complete sense so at times, the book was very confusing. The descriptions of the places were very confusing and at times the way Collins described what was happening felt very rushed and not clear. Like for a moment ago the characters were fighting and then in the next two sentences, they are now in a safe area.

Another thing that felt rushed were some of the deaths and the mournings of the deaths. Although, it could just be like this to show how quickly Katniss had to process them but there were some characters who died that I thought deserved more explanation and acknowledgment.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*. For example, when Finnick died, they never really mentioned it again. It felt as though he was forgotten even though he played such a big role in the previous book. I feel like in the movies they made it a bigger deal but I could just be forgetting some details. Additionally, when Prim died, I thought Katniss would be making a much bigger deal of it especially since all of this was a result of her trying to save Prim from having to compete in the Hunger Games. I know, while Katniss was back in District 12 at the end of the book, she did cry with Buttercup but I felt like just mentioning that Katniss would cry never really showed how strong and meaningful their relationship was, especially with the way it was portrayed in the first book. *SPOILERS FINISHED*

This book was okay nonetheless and the entire series was amazing! I totally recommend it and I am excited to read the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

  2. Hello Sofia. I love the mockingjay book but personally I enjoyed the movie better because it got so boring! I agree with you that they got over Finnicks death way too easily even though he was such a important role in the whole rebellion thing.

  3. Hi Sofia, I agree that the Mockingjay is the most boring book out of the trilogy. I remember being very bored reading the first half of the book. However, I think the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes really makes up for it. I'm really excited to hear your opinions on it!
